Imagine this scenario: Flash is definetely dead and it has been replaced by HTML5. I do not support this statement at all, but it could be.

So: What happens in that case with display Ads?

One the big advantages of Flash is that it is a program which can be used by many differente profiles, such as designers, animators and developers. In my work I give support to more than 50 creative agencies to make RichMedia Ads, the more of them are made with Flash. In my opinion all conventional banners are made by designers, and about the 50% of RichMedia Ads also, the rest need more developer/animation skills.

So, if the previous statement happens: What would creative agencies do?
To answer this we should go to the past. We must know that Flash was first a program for designers and animators, then, Flash progressed a lot, so many programmers also began to use it. And also many designers using Flash like me migrated and converted into designers-developers, what they called devigners.

But, to be honest, I don´t see these people moving to html5. Why? Because by now there´s not a wysiwyg program for html5, or is there?

Well, there´s a company called AdVine, Sprout, making something about this. This is called Sproutinc, the idea is this:

Analysis: Google Swiffy: Convert Flash to HTML

About a month ago we had from Google this extension presumely to transform Flash to HTML easily.

If you go to the website you can download it as an .mxp. I shall remind you that if you have more than one Flash version installed you could have a conflict with the Adobe Extension Manager. I had to unistall the previous version of it so as to run this extension.

Easy to install

Download the Swiffy Extension (.mxp file) and open it.Adobe Extension Manager will install the Swiffy Extension, making it immediately available to use from Flash Professional.

Export to HTML5 with one command

The new “Export to HTML5 (Swiffy)” item in the “Commands” menu exports your file to HTML5 and opens the result in your default web browser. Assigning a keyboard shortcut to this command makes it even easier!

Quick feedback

Information about the conversion process, such as features that are not supported by Swiffy, is shown in the “Output” panel, immediately after the export finishes.

So, you have it installed! And now?

Let´s make a simple banner with no Code, only timeline animation, with Actionscript 2 and exported as a .swf, you will have this:

Now, if you go to Flash > Menu> Commands > Export as HTML5 (Swiffy) you will have this advice first:

Later, your brower will open a new Tab, so if your .swf route was this:

Five statements about Flash totally misleading:

1- Flash is the devil, the virus of Matrix: This has become a Credo for fanboys
2- Flash is about games and porn: Not for Apps, Advertising, Websites, desktop applications or RIAs.
3- Flash is dead, Steve Jobs is dead: Probably they are but their memory and work will be always live.
4- Flash developers are mobile developers: Nothing to do, just a few %
5- AIR is the same as Flash: I would say Air has better fame than Flash, perhaps because of Android

Five conclussions:
1 -The death of the multiplatform developer
2- FlashPlayer is death, long live to AIR (remember: The web is dead, long live to Apps)
3- Adobe strategy has been really "strange"
4- Mobile has killed Flash, at least FlashPlayer
5- If you are a Mobile programmer, go to HTML5

Anatomy of the perfect banner

From Dutch Cowboys I´ve found this infographic coming from BuySellAds.

We are strictily talking about design, not about CTR or tech.

So, mainly they say that a good banner shall have: Interactivity, good use of space, compelling imagery, good texts, call to action, branding elements and a bit of humor.

What shouldn´t be on a banner: Lost messages, falses promises, excesive impact and bad colour treatment.

In my opinion, if we talk about sales, I still think the most important thing is the publisher where the Ad goes. Talking about branding is different, that way creativity is much more important.

Two days ago, there was a blog post from Neal Mohan, vicepresident od Display Advertising from Google with the title There’s a perfect ad for everyone

Who is this man and what did he say?

For the second answer, this is Google and in my opinion they are launching one of the biggest campaigns of the year with Watch This Space. Everyone of us has seen it even on print. It´s not a prize winning campaign but its omnipresent.

Some time ago Google was too centered on AdSense and others. So, what would happen if the bigger advertiser would jump on Richmedia display ads? Well they first bought Double Click Studio and then began to work. In fact that´s a good idea, to have an agency making formats for your publisher page, even more if all people are saying again and again that video is going to take the web. Yes I´m talking about YouTube...

So they became one more of the richmedia publishers you should follow, with MSN, Yahoo and AOL.

First question: What did he say?

1 -The number of display ad impressions will decrease by 25 percent per person. I don´t believe so. It´s like saying they will remove Ads from tv. no sense.

2- Engagement rates across all display ads will increase by 50 percent.
Well, I understand video comes strong although maybe not that amount. How do you measure engage? I remember, there was a mobile phone from Nokia, called Nokia NGage. It was for gaming, enjoying time. So now it will be video, hope better than pre-roll.

3- People will have a direct say in 25 percent of the ads they see. This is related to Cookies. In fact there´s a new law coming, at least in Europe, I don´t believe it will change a lot.

4- 35 percent of campaigns will primarily use metrics beyond clicks and conversions. That´s logic. Richmedia and video bring new metrics against CTR. Anytime you want your customer to be engaged you can give him a lot of metrics.

5- 25 billion ads per day will tell people why they are seeing them. You can also ask Steve Jobs what does he thinks about cookies and his iAd. Also Zuckerberg, I look forward to seeing the day when display ads go to Social Media king (FB).

6- Over 40 percent of online Americans will name display ads as their favorite ad format. The other 60% must be watching the superbowl Ads video.

Well, we don´t have the data that Google has but same intuitions had already been said

Life of a banner. RichMedia Workflow

This the tipical scheme of a banner life, it could also be a richmedia workflow life:

First step: A customer who wants to sell something or just make branding or so, decides to make a Media campaign on the Internet. Usually they´re launched just after you see the TV ad.

So customer meets his Media Agency. There´s a man on that agency called the Media Planner. He is in charge of negotiating and making the best out of the budget customer has. So, he could do SEO, SEM, Social Media or a Display Campaign which is our case. Probably the final product of this man is a planning.

Next step: There´s a Tech agency in charge of keeping an eye so everything is fine. They know the specifications of every format for Publishers, they are in contact with creative agencies, and they are able to solve any issue related to the campaign (creativity, traffic, tracking, implementation). I work in one of these ;)

The technology agency contacts the creativity agency, they give them templates and tell them what they can and can´t do acording to publishers´specs. So they work hand by hand with creative agencies. These ones usually have a design or programming department.

When the creative agency has the campaign ready, there´s a proccess called validation which has three steps:

- Technical level, in charge of the Tech Agency

- Creative level, usually for the customer

- Publisher level

This one is the final step. Publisher checks all tags are ok and insert the ads in its website.

Well, this is a very reduced and simplified view of how it is. A banner life or a campaign life could last a lot of time, or have different steps. These five are main characters of a banner story.

Main skill to improve this workflow is communications between the five parts.

The lift in likelihood to recommend was nearly three times as high for entertainment industry campaigns as for other campaigns.

Campaigns that feature expandable rich media ads performed best, with a 34.4% lift. Flash banner campaigns underperformed compared to the average. None of the campaigns studied featured only static banners.

This research also confirmed earlier findings by Lotame that showed that the likelihood to recommend stat correlated positively with other metrics of brand lift—meaning that the boost in intent to recommend went hand in hand with a boost in other branding metrics.

The closest correlation was with intent to view—for campaigns that advertised a show or movie—followed by purchase intent. Ad recall, clickthrough rate and interaction rate also rose with likelihood to recommend.

It´s on the news from last week. IAB Interactive Advertising Bureau, has made public the winner formats from "Rising Stars". The main criteria for this was Branding, User Experience, Funcionality, Integration and Adoption. Let´s have a look to the new Richmedia formats approved!

It´s a 970x250, the one we see everyday on YouTube. By now, this format is exclusive for DoubleClick Rich Media.

A 970x90, we are used to seeing this one working on media. The Ad pushes down all the content, usually in home pages. The video makes special attention on Social Media integration (quite easy from Flash)

Usually it´s seen on MSN home. It moves all content to one size, usually to the left, working with Javascript. Works specially fine if you combine it with a leaderboard and a great wallpaper.

So, what can we say about these formats? It were about 24 companies taking part on the meeting, some of them really great and known for their creativity as TheBarbarianGroup. Besides there will be some formats out of date.

This is a good initiative for the most important entity on online advertisement. We have already seen some of this new formats.

In my opinion innovation on formats is a key point, specially for publishers as they can have advantage over competitors. Perhaps it´s time for IAB to revise all specs for Richmedia Ads (Richmedia Creative Guidelines are from May 2008)

Hi friends! Here´s my commented summary of 2010 from the digital, interactive, creative, tech and marketing point of view. The subtitle would be something like "Things that called my attention more in 2010".

January

It began with Google Nexus One. What was the reason for its fail? Probably the placement/store, I also think Android was not ready yet for that jump.

In Spain we discovered the animated series of Freaklance (freak + freelance) in relation to the advertising world. It was not Mad Men but amusing. Also we discoverd all the actions of Uniqlo together. I did like a lot this campaing against smokers from "I believe in Advertising", Canari

The most important point of the month was the publishing of the Digital Marketing Outlook. We look forward to hearing from them about this year!

March began with the launch of the new site from TheFWA. Them we discovered Google Chrome, it´s my default browser (has Flash plugin integrated), althought there are better extensions in Firefox, at least by now. Then Alice came from Wonderland. I liked it, but not all.

We had in Spain one of the first Flash Events, FlashDay directed by Xavi Beumala at the same time that AdobeCS5 was about to launch. This month we saw great campaigns of Richmedia as this one from Toyota or this from Smart, AdobeLabs Ideas was launched, a great power exhibition from Uniqlo, one site in the same way as Alice, "Follow the white Rabbit", and more videos from Ok Go.

I thik it was this month when we heart about AppVertising, as the end of LOST arrived.

Best places to work on Marketing, this list was published. Sincerely, I didn´t find my company on it, so I decide to look for another job. There were also good sites as Haiku Lovers, UTweet from Uniqlo, the Web Trend Map from InformationArchitects and some changes in the website of FullAsAGoog.

I liked very much this campaign against smokers. In Spain we are the last country to forbid smoking in pubs and restaurants, AntiSmoking Ads

In april I was able to ask for a trial of CS5, so I discoverd rotoscopy and Code Snippets Panels. We also saw kinStudio from Windows. Interesting online campaigns were this from Smart, this other from VolksWagen, blueyourfriends, and all that was done for the promotion of Avatar.

We finally found the Flash CS5 Documentation, no doubt this is the best version, as good as CS3, althought they shoud improve the Help.

So, what happened really with this controversy Apple vs Adobe? This is how I see it:

To be truth many Flash programmers hoped to see Flash working on the iPhone. Adobe had prepared the iPhone Packager to compile from Flash to iPhone. It was not this way. The iPhone didn´t have Flash and neither the iPad. Jobs published his "thoughts about Flash" and banned all the app compilation from other platforms different to Objectice C (not only Flash, also Unity). So a war began!!! Mr. Jobs had on his side all his legion of Apple fanboys. They talked about HTM5 again and againg as it was the new Mesias. I remember a great confrontation between Flash friends and Flash not friends. I used to compile all tweets about it in my timeline.

And what happened? Adobe did his best betting on Android. Android grew and grew and the Smartphones market began to use Flash (Blackberry, Motorolla, HTC...) even the new upcoming tablets will have flash. Besides, it was proved that Jobs argues about the Flash processing on smartphones were TOTALLY a lie. Jobs was menazed by the antimonopolistic laws. It was clearly seen that HTML5 was not at his best (will it be as the semantic web that never came?). Android did his best, I bet you Android will pass iOS next year. Not only that, Adobe supported Flash and HTML5 from his speciallity: Technology. We could see in AdobeMax how to compile from Flash to HTML5, Adobe Wallaby: from Flash to HTML5 in one step

Apple gave up about their compiling restrictions, so every Appleboy shut up their mouth. Will we see Flash on the iPhone? We don´t mind. In my opinion, it was not about having or not having Flash, it was about dominating the Advertising market on smartphones and tablets (iAd), good try Mr. Jobs, but you are the Loser!

We are hearing a lot lastly about the future of video in the web, moreover, here in Spain I´ve seen platforms improving video seo in the web as DigitalNovae does

Besides, we are also seeing really good sites in the FWA website, with what I would call interactive video, for example this one from ACTI or this other from Wrangler

I´m sorry about HTML5 boys, you can not do this by now, only Flash can. So, this is the question: Is it possible to move the video head with Actonscript? Can you play backward?

For the second question I don´t have the code (I welcome solutions), but for the first I do.

First, if you happen to load a video in a website, if you can it would be better to embed it in the timeline and then just use tags with gotoAndPlay or gotoAndStop.

The problem is more complicated if you have to load several videos in streaming and you want to interact with them.

Lastlly we had a project for a customer, he wanted to do something similar, you can see a

demo here. This is a microsite with four streaming videos, we load four .flv with the FlvPlayBack component. The briefing says that whenever the user interacts over or out the video, there must be a listener so that the video shows other message or not.

To do this, we followed some recomendations from our friend luckyPig, the best way is to make an array with the video cuepoints where you will work. For example, let´s take the video of the girl from the right.

If we see the complete video, we will do two loops, standby loop and movement loop. Also we will mark the cuepoints of the jumps from forward to backward. If you record this, you´d better use a croma and export if for .swf from AfterEffects.

Statement by Apple on App Store Review Guidelines

The App Store℠ has revolutionized the way mobile applications are developed and distributed. With over 250,000 apps and 6.5 billion downloads, the App Store has become the world’s largest mobile application platform and App Store developers have earned over one billion dollars from the sales of their apps.
We are continually trying to make the App Store even better. We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart. Based on their input, today we are making some important changes to our iOS Developer Program license in sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9 to relax some restrictions we put in place earlier this year.
In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need.
In addition, for the first time we are publishing the App Store Review Guidelines to help developers understand how we review submitted apps. We hope it will make us more transparent and help our developers create even more successful apps for the App Store.
The App Store is perhaps the most important milestone in the history of mobile software. Working together with our developers, we will continue to surprise and delight our users with innovative mobile apps.

Yesterday was the launch of the campaign Lost in val sinestra which I found via Yorokobu.

This is a microsite where you get connected by Facebook, then you choose the characters (your friends!) and at the end of the process you get a video as this one:

We´ve already seen the same idea a couple of times or more, for example in the site Je tue un ami com a été tué, and also in a swedish website about communications whose name I don´t remember now. Something similar was seen in Prototype

This is a video where they insert photos and texts with the Facebook API by an XML. Later, the difficult step, is to mask all the photos so as to see them in the video. I´ve seen more as this one but not as good.

Probably the video has cuepoints where they insert the photos, Flash makes this all right even if the video is on streaming.

In this case they forgot the option to share the final video with other APIS (Twitter, Blogger, etc.) Anyway I´m watching more and more like this in the future. The use of Flash within Facebook is a warranty of success.

So, now that everyone has installed his Flash CS5 version or trial I wonder how many of the 3 million of programmers are using it.

In my case I jumped directly from CS3 to CS5, due to the unexpected errors of CS4. Other issue if you used the Flash IDE was the long waitting time in CS4 for compilation or just to see the Actions Panel.

By the way, here some links I find usefull, I´m thinking about making a Flash CS5 Professional Cheet Sheet, I still have to collect the twitter accounts.

For all those people telling again and again about Flash Dead or long live to HTML5 or talking like a chatterbox about the future of Social Media web, etc., etc. I say to you;

"Use HTML just in case needed"

Seriously, I´m tired of hearing the sentence "let´s use flash correctly", so I´m gonna give you my point of view about who decides when to use Flash and why.

When I began to work in the Ad Agency where I work now, the new CEO gave us a speech. He is a specialist in ecommerce and told us that he was very interested in SEO strategies. Once the speech was finished I went to have some words with him. I just wanted to know if I had to look for another job (yes, that´s right! I´m the Flashman!)

What happened? Well actually we´ve done some SEO but the queen of technologies here is Flash, and the rest are just behind it. You can´t imagine how many media plans, microsites, demos, richmedia we´ve done here (and on record time). This is the argue which I´ve seen more from Adobe against the unbeliever Jobs for not having FlashPlayer on the iPad: The browsing experience. Can you do things as Papervision? Can you move things as we do? Can you do Augmented Reality?

Later on a new technical director came to the Agency. He told me:

"- Listen, Fernando! We are gonna use Flash just in cases we need it!"

Really funny, even more when he has to give me a hand with Flash. I always answered:

"- We are an Ad Agency, if you don´t want Flash, go to technology!"

I´m talking about Advertising, in this sector my conclussion is that: Yes, it´s worth to make SEO, but this guys from SEO are not going to do the same as me with their JQuery libraries or so. Also you find account directors talking again and again about SEO, SEM, Google and so on. I have nothing against people working on SEO, but I have many things to say against those people closing their eyes at Flash, wherever they come from (creatives, tecnicians or account directors).

So let´s think about these three areas! I´ve been collecting all the twits related to this issue in my twitter timeline. From all the opinions about Flash, HTML5, Mr. Jobs and so, I choose the article from PixelBorne Why Flash doesn´t shuck!

There are some interesting points in this article, first one is related to the creative profile of Flash. There are some things which Flash can do and the rest of technologies can´t, except Silverlight but it´s not as popular as Flash by now.

Sometimes I find designers against Flash, Veerle Pieters for example, famous illustrator and against Flash. How is it? And illustrator who doesn´t like animation? Honestly, I can´t understand it. It is a very strange behavior. And this is not a single case, I don´t know if this responds to Adobe for changing the mild Flash profile user (from Flash for designers to Flash for programmers) with version 3 of the Creative Suite. Anyway, knowing the creative power of Flash, if a designer does not bet for it, there´s a mystery for me.

Second area: Technology.

It´s not only a fight against some creative directors, it´s also against a technical director. First we should be aware that Flash can work for web, but for many other technologies (desktop apps, widgets, games, video, RIAs, mobile devices, eLearning, Art installations, ads on Times Square, etc.) There used to be the against Flash thought in favour of Ajax, HTML and JQuery. There has been also another movement of Java programmers migrating to Actionscript 3 on the frontside (many of the to Flex). The question here is: What´s faster, making it with Flash or with HTML?

What´s expensive/cheaper making it with Flash or with HTML? It´s all about time and money?

So your agency sells something. It goes to the creative department, there´s an idea! Then it goes to the technical director. This is the million dollar question: Do we make it with Flash or with HTML? Beware! The enemy is at home! I´ve seen fights with this. Sometimes what the creative department proposes to do with Flash is made in HTML and obviously the result IS NOT THE SAME. They say websites have forms or need to be indexed. Drop a Shadowbox! Do you remember the times when we used to make two versions of a website, one in Flash and another in HTML? We also thought that blogs had died but I tend to think we´re going back again, at least for the device market.

Third area: Accounts/Sales.

a) "Against Flash" executives: They hardly ever realise when a site is made in Flash (haven´t discovered that you can check it with the right mouse button). Sometimes they say:
"- Ok, the web is nice, but is not searchable, indexable or servible."
I wonder how many meanings of the words they use do they know. They should read Todd Perkins. One more: for example, el Farmville, the game where you are hours and hours playing... Is it made in Flash? Yes my friend... Is it searchable? is it indexable? is it servible? Game is life my friend!!!

Another point here for Flash: Games and porno sites warranty the future of this technology (great!)

b) ProFlash executives: I like this people. They really love Flash. They discover pageflip effect (yes, we know it´s about 10 years old) and want it for the customers. They discover video on the web, everything is video! Discover a widget, let´s do a widget! A game on social media. Let´s do games! YES YES YES, this is the interactive orgasm!

c) Just executives.
They are centered in strategy. Don´t want to sell Flash anyway, so you can´t talk to them and explain about technology.

Back to our topic: So, who decides where and when to use Flash? The budget? The timing? the creative director? The technical dept? The executives? The customer? The CEO? Who has the power in your study/agency/consultancy? The one who has the power, does he decide? Steve Jobs has power, but you can´t be authoritarian on technology or technology will eat you...

And you? Do you have the power? Do you have what it takes? Do the right thing as me! If you see a piece which does not worth Flash and is made in Flash, tell them. And if you see a piece not made in Flash which has to be done with it, tell them again!

Apple, Adobe and Google, are you playing?

Lastly I´ve been collecting all twits related to iPad, iPhone, FlashPlayer, the future of Flash, HTML5 and so on, well, there are much more, it´s clear

Actually, I made a survey in TwtPoll with the question: Why iPhone and iPad don´t have Flash?

I tried not to be tendencious (there are options to criticise anyone), results are to come but you can make a prospection about them. We will comment the conclusions in March.

Anyway, my opinion has changed a bit after readding all these twits. But now I´m interested in talking about the strategy of these three companies Apple, Adobe and Google.

So I begun to draw and made three schematic graphs. Game is life!

1. The prisoner´s dilemma.

Let´s think on collaborative strategies or not. Three players: Apple, Google and Adobe. Each one with its products. I reminded when I studied statistics and Game Theory. Taken from wikipedia: "If we assume that each player cares only about minimizing his or her own time in jail, then the prisoner's dilemma forms a non-zero-sum game in which two players may each cooperate with or defect from (betray) the other player. In this game, as in most game theory, the only concern of each individual player (prisoner) is maximizing his or her own payoff, without any concern for the other player's payoff".

Indeed this is a reduccionist point of view, but very amusing cos there would be cases to collaborate or not. For example, if you see the graphic:

- Case 1: Everyone collaborates.

- Case 2: Google says no.

- Case 3: Apple says no.

- Case 4: Adobe says no.

- Case 5: Google and Apple say no.

- Case 6: Apple and Adobe say no no.

- Case 7: Google and Adobe say no.

- Case 8: All of them say no. It´s war!!!

The question here is to know where we are, who is interested in collaborate and why.

2. Colaboration strategies.

Other point of view: Every player has its strategy, and there are some areas where players can collaborate or not with the others.

For example (see graphic):

- Area 1 Google and Adobe collaborate with Nexus 1 via Open Screen Project.

- Area 2: Google and Apple. for example HTML5.

- Area 3: Apple and Adobe. The products of Creative Suite, plugins, etc.

- Area 4: Places where all of the can collaborate (or not).

3. The platform problem.

Last point of view. To resolve the future of the web, the future of flash, the future or whatsoever. Well, it´s too soon to say anything. We don´t know how players will evolve.

Anyway: Three players: Apple, Google and Adobe. To be or not to be. Some say "kill the browser!", some "kill Flash", others "let´s RIA!". Statistics say about the rising of web access from mobile devices. Not only that, but also take into account the business model of the apps, new future devices (iPad or whatsoever as a TV + internet (a successful one)).

To be frank, don´t know if it´s serious enough to compare languages with tools (my apologise for objectice instead of objective). Green colour means OK, yellow means ?

Imagine now you are a developer. Most of us used to be multidisciplinar devigners, some moved to Ajax, some to CSS, others to RIAs, Actionscript or so.

What´s the question? Which is the language with more future? Which is the most difficult? Which one will give you more money?

I´ve just seen the video from Flash CS5 in TheFlashBlog, hereafter some comments about it:

- Workflow: I am totally amazed with the idea of the xml format and the new publishing features of the new Flah CS5. I am not sure but it look like now if a designer wants to change a picture from a banner, for example, he won´t need to open Flash, just can change it in the dinamyc library. Probably the same for texts. Moreover, I this this can be done just editing the xml or overwritting the file. Fantastic!

The publishing settings, the xml format (reminds me of Silverlight) and the SWF History are going to improve definetely the designer/programmer workflow.

- Code Snippets Panel: Lee says he has "tears in his eyes" when he sees this. I think many designers will as well. Little pieces of code that will help designers for migration to AS3. I hope anyone can customize this the way you can do in Photoshop with the Actions panel.

- Nice news also from video adjustments and text formats for the new release.

- Improvements on the Flash IDE code pannel (Yes, I am one of the 3% that still uses it!) and on the connection to run projects from Flash Builder (Flex) easily.

Just a couple of things I´ve seen:
- No support for Actionscript 2: This is positive in my opinion
- No support for Flash CS3: Well, many of us will jump from CS3 to CS5. We all know about the problems CS4 has and programmers, not only designers are looking forward to hearing from Flash CS5 release.
- Not much about iPhone, by now!

I bought this book about three months ago but I have had too much work to port about it. You can find the resume and buy the book on line in the Taschen shop, where they say: "This addition to our popular Web Design series focuses on very carefully crafted navigation systems, where usability and narrative are taken in consideration in the development of the website. Featuring over 90 projects from more than 20 countries, as well as case studies on outstanding work by the world’s leading studios such as Fahrenheit, Clusta, and Sequence, this collection illustrates the ingenious solutions to one of the most difficult and important aspects of web design".

Well, the book is a good one, specially for people who don´t surf on the web. For me the most important thing of a website done in Flash or Flex, is the menu, and menu is a sinonimous of navigation. In this book the 90% of the websites are done in Flash and Flex (as usual in Wiedemann´s books).

As in other books of Wiedemann I miss some more content, a prototype section would have been a great idea for this book. Anyway, we find good works with masks as Elanskis, great websites from photographers as janknoff, towndrow, Mark Holthusen, Take Agency, Thomas Rusch.

Referring to navigation I like very much the websites from Asylum and glasshouse mixing illustration with navigation, iconic websites as Subraumstudio, mouse navigation sites as Worse than a fairy tail and CenterPlan, grid button ones as Tilt Design Studio, portfolios as Studio FM Milano, circular menus as DankaStudio, skinning navigation sites as this from volvo, perspective as AxeSaone, and lastly this from Julie Bayard.

I strongly think January is gonna have a big movement in job offers, you know companies making budgets and all those things.

I was laid off last year in January, it just cost me 10 days to find another job. But perhaps now it´s a good time to see this trailer about the topic I´ve seen on Twitter.

To do this you need:
- A camara, in this case, a broken Sony Ericsson W910. Yes it is broken, the effect of the image is not any plugin or filter, the mobile just fell down on the floor and its camera records as you see ;-]
- One online designer, in this case my workmate Elena Balduque.
- Free time and sense of humour. Well we did this on rest-times in our work. You can see here other videos like me eating chips here:

The aim was playing with cuepoints and events in AS3. I mus say, we recorded 10 videos, first one very long and then 9 different videos in nine positions, each one looking at the camara from a different view.

So first thing I tried was to implement the nine videos in a Flash via Netstream so as to deploy them. Once the user clicks any video this one becomes the central one and all the other videos just look at the selected one. The problem about this was that if you hadn´t a good connection videos were lost and all the experiment misunderstood.

So loading nine videos was near impossible. This is what I made: A timeline with 9 labels. So with the events I move from one to another depending on the position, is just adjusting.

They have talked a lot about the possibility of making iPhone apps from the new upcoming FlashCS5. Good news!

Anyway, we can´t miss the point about designers moving to programming or just designers using Actionscript 3. So this is the question:

If you were a designer what would you like to have in the new Flash CS5?

For this the Code Snippets Panel is really a great answer. I am sure many designers have already used this kind of panels (Gaia Framework, Event Generator, Quesy Tools, Kuler). You just install an .mxp and all it´s done! Easy! With no code.

So, what should Flash CS5 have in Code snippets Panel to help designers?
This is my whish list:

- Preload: Instead of making it coding, a simple preload could be prepared for this
- FullScreen: Liquid Design configuration. I could be included a FullScreen Background image option, so when you change your browser width or height you would see it ok. As SWffit does
- Google Analytics: We´ve seen it as a .swc, a panel would be good also
- Gaia Framework: I think this panel is done for programmers, it should be even more easy. Just think you are a designer and you don´t know nothing about code
- Loading external swf
- Motion pannel: Somethin as Greensock does or editing the new possibilities of bones animations
- XML Load
- Sound Load
- Load BitMapData
- Forms, could be included the connection to a php, Email checking, etc.
- SWF Object and SWF Address integration
- A menu builder
- 3D integration (PaperVision, Away3d)
- Text Formatting (as panels in Photoshop do)
- Banner Creation: With things that designers need (Clicktag, invisible button, etc.)
- Image Gallery

The first deals with the issue of control of Internet advertising. You know Google or other sites, they can store our data and preferences and advertise with them. This is a subject already past but occasionally comes to the fore.

The second is on the line of surreptitious advertising and sponsorship. In the USA if you have a blog and advertise something you must do so openly, not hidden "bloggers to publish a sponsorship must disclose what type of materials have connections with the seller of that product or service." If not, they face fines of up to 7,500 euros. "

Well, this is what is happening in America, but could come to Europe quickly. It's easy: I am the agency, I do not want to spend as much dough to make a media plan or go out in the most popular media sites (eg online newspapers), I'll pay blogs and bloggers either in cash or in kind. I get cheaper, and make noise about my product and it also creates good opinion of the product that I offer.

In Spain Waskmann did something with Vodafone and The Post Impossible. Well, this is not prohibited in Spain by any means, but I would class as "smart advertising". So watch out, your purchase could be induced my friend.

Great news from Adobe!!!

So, at the end it wasn´t Flex, it was Flash who introduced itself on the iPhone (I´m sorry about you flexers ;-])

All members from the Flash Community are posting about the new upcoming features of Flash CS5, mainly:

- Applications for iPhone
- New text capabilities via the Text Layout Framework (TLF)
- XML based FLA files
- Code Snippets panel
- Flash Builder™ integration
- Improved ActionScript editor

What can we say about this? This is a big step, one of the biggest, even more if we take into account that more and more users are using their mobile devices to get into the internet or to use apps.

We can say also that Adobe has thought on designers migrating from AS2 to AS3 (code snippets panel), on integration (same point of view as CS3), and has improved some things they really had to do, such as text capabilities and the Actionscript Editor. YES I´m using it, I have used it since I learnt Flash and I will use it, no matter what you say.

For the Flash Community these are great news! Probably we won´t have to migrate to see our apps in the iPhone, the browser will have to wait until Apple decission...

Some thoughts about the jump from designing to programming and about workflow

Theory 1: The number of designers moving to programming has decreased
Is there a magician who tells you about your future? Designer or programmer? What are you? There´s a ditch between them and it´s getting bigger!

There are some programmers who used to design but they realised they´d better do programming cos it was easy, practice and a challenge.

Flashers used to be outsiders, the frontieer between design and programming. We were called Flash designers/animators/programmers. Now this has changed. Many of us moved from design to programming but I can´t see this migration anymore. Why?

I have some possible answers: It´s difficult, it´s not a vocation, there´s no need to do it, Adobe´s policy...

Theory 2: Programmer vs. Designer
There were programmers working with computers before all designers began to use it. Why are we sometimes considered just as producers ?

Designer: Someone who designs
Programmer: Someone who programs

I wonder how a designer can tell how things will move on the screen. They shouldn´t do about interaction if there´s a flasher in the team.

I don´t know what´s worst: a customer trying to design or a designer trying to animate something. The answer is always the same: Why don´t you do it?

In the end, the most important thing for the good work of an agency, a studio or so, is the workflow. The rest are just stories and stories

Bing + Flash

So, I was making some experiments on Flashsites on Bing, the result I have is nothing. Bing is obviously not indexing Flash content on its searches.

I tend to think that this is another political issue: Silverlight vs. Flash, but I don´t know if Bing ins indexing Silverlight content. Anyway if we are hand to hand to Google we won´t haver problems.

If you want to register a site freely in Bing, just go here. You can upload your sitemap or apply for an appID, etc. (I have the strange feeling of having seen this anywhere else haha). I saw the banner on hotmail not in any other site.

Fantastic video from MSLBVR, the animation was planned and animated as the prologue / intro to a documentary. (That explains the absurd, seemingly unfinished, ending. That is where the actual documentary starts.... )

The briefing was to show an evolution of computer games.
The documentary itself is about different people, based here in germany, showing their everyday life, and their addiction to the same specific, famous MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role playing game) that starts with a "W".

Every game character in this prologue was reinterpreted, redrawn (...one pixel at a time), and animated frame by frame.

I had a little chat with a friend working for Eyewonder and decided to post about it.

In Spain, and differing from other countries the rich formats leader is Eyeblaster. There are also some new firms as Richandreach but the other two are the main ones.

Eyeblaster has just published the content of the sessions they already did in Madrid. You can watch this video of Pablo Morales from Eyeblaster talking about future and change. Also take a look at the other videos of the congress on the right.

Ok, let´s talk now about Eyewonder!
My friend told me: Now it is the time for videoplayers, tickers and overlays. You will see also a lot of lateral scrolls. For example:

This is a creation from Eyewonder Germany. It has 3 banners, two of them sincronized, with a superlateral layer (2400 x875). I scored 374m, did you beat me?

Another one will be this, usually they go inside this kind of websites.

What about crisis? Internet is beatting the TV, all of us know, anyway campaings are a bit poor cos there are creativities without video or impressions are passed to display (gif, jpg, etc.)

The cost of a campaign is between 1.000 and 2.000€, it depends. Some charge just CPM (cost per 1.000 impressions), it is usually standard and depends on the work donde.
Take a look at this one and wait for the banner to load.

What can I say about this?
Ok, if you have to work with them, just don´t do like me!, call them first! It´s better!

So this is what I feel like about the event

Day 1 / Friday 26

- Design Interaction Masterclass: I couldn´t go because of work. It was about prototyping and things like that.

- LaDespensa: Neither did I go. This is a Spanish Agency centered in video and advertising.

- GrupoW: Nice! I have always thought tha GroupW abuses of using video websites, specially as the y haven´t the same speed as Europe (Mexico). Some of their sites have excesive preloading times. Anyway, I liked very mucha their interactive sites, their advergaming, the making of of the projects, and yes, yes we flash!!!

- Interbrand: Very interesting, they made a seminar in DMSTK some time ago. I didn´t know they had done the trademark of Mad009. Very serius and corporative. It is quite curious the alliance between DMSTK + Interbrand, can be a great one! They´re planning exporting the format of the event to Lisboa, London and some place more I miss.

- Herraiz & Soto: One of my favorites related to interaction. In the past they were the best hand to hand with DoubleYou, but this one lost a lot when Borgström left them. They talk about making Rock and Roll and having fans instead of customers (as Apple). Also they talked a lot about where is the advertising market going. They defend and promote technology. Great!

- Antoine et Manuel: These two amusing french people have lots of talent and many many jobs, some even in the Louvre. I´m happy to have news from our neighbours. They had some problems with the English but it was great when they talked about the money they got and things like that.

- Alex Trochut: Designers were really enthusiastic with this boy. It was interesting to hear about his trayectory and his family. Alex Trochut or how to become an artist, I would say. I think he´s got much more work than what he showed. Anyway his speech was about his progress.

- Johny Kelly: A last-minute exibition cos he was the substitute of n Hilman Curtis que estaba enfermo. He is the author of Procrastination and The Seed. Told us about the making of of his motion graphics. He even tried to record the noise of lobsters boiling!!! Saturday we had the opportunity to have meal with him and he told us how is it to work in London.

Day 2 / Saturday 27

- Laura Meseguer: I couldn´t go because of work. She´s a tipografist talking about which type to choose and when.

- DNX Group: If you follow Mad009 impressions he is being critizised. This is because he talked about a university that he wants to place in Spain. People misunderstood him and thought all he wanted to do was selling a Master. But it wasn´t, cos everything comes from a fundation. Anyway, he also explained about a travel he made around Europe and America getting in touch with the best Interaction and Design Colleges.

- BaseMotion: For me the best. They talked about workflow, creative phases, interaction customer-agency. The works Perspectives and Telex are really good!

- Agency Republic: I think this man know a lot about advertising, but I´m not sure Augmented reality is the best way to make an exhibition. His theme was creativity, with a lot of examples. His voice would be something like: - Believe!

- Domestika: From the organizers of the event, I couldn´t attend.

- Waskman: Last year was the best. This time they took the Marketing Director of Vodafone Spain so as to see the customer´s point of view. This is an agency making events and promotions, really funny. It´s amazing how they use advertising laterally (using bloggers or news).

- Trevor Jackson: This was an interview with this multidisciplinar artist-designer. Nice format.

- Pentagram: Great works but I missed a bit more rythmical exhibition.

What can I tell about the organisers? It was good. This year you could see two screens instead of one. More media. Masterclass (special class about tipography and interaction).

Actually this is a multidisciplinar event in touch with Design, Motion, Art, Interaction, Music, and at the same time answering some important questions everyone of us have: Workflow, how to make things? Why? Where is all these going? etc.

Thoughts on Infographics websites

This is a personal ecuation I have:

Ok, let´s see some examples:

This is called PlayPrime, comes from Japan, awarded in DesignLicks. Although it should have a better English version (I can´t read Japanese by now), you can select a player, move around the scenario, play games. Very amusing.

Second example: DodgeQuest, it looks like an 80´s game, pixel fonts, dialogues, this is gaming! A very good idea!

Third example: ComcastTown, just awarded in FWA and mentioned in AdobeEdgeNL. You can interact with the town, discover, move and whatsoever.

Fourth example: Desktop Vacation from HybridWorks, this is just like an interactive screensaver, but it has the same idea. A relaxing interactive infographic.

Thoughts on Flash Analytics and indexing

Recetnly I had the opportunity to check how good it works the Google Analitycs library for Actionscript 3. Also I checked what they say about flash searcheability in Adobe, in Googleblog and in GoogleWebMasterCentral.

So, what are my conclussions?

A big step was taken, but we still can do more. I´d like to shut up all those stupid bigmouths talking about Flash not indexing on Google and so on. I can do it in a 50%, but I still want more!

I had a look in the forums from SEOmoz and SEO pages, to see what´s their opinion about Flash searcheability. Their opinion is quite near to mine, they think things have improved but there´s still a lot to do in this area.

As yet unseen footage of the first stable version of levelHead, an augmented-reality spatial-memory game by Julian Oliver.

This is a spoiler for the first 3 cubes: the relatively easy red cube, the tricky green cube and finally the very difficult orange cube (dubbed the 'Apartment').

Los Peces Making Of

This are some photos and videos about the website www.lospeces.es

Los Peces is a pop Spanish band from Spain. For their second LP we released a new version of their website. So this is how we made it:

First we had the previous website from 2006. It was me who made it. Just simple, a menu with a photo slide.

We had also a logo simulating the yin-yan, two fishes biting their tails:
Before anything we had the new video of the band, with a stop-motion pop theme.

So, the video defined the cover of the album as you can see in the photo.

So, before doing anything we uploaded an "on construction website" with the launching day of the project, March 14th, just the day the LP was on the shops.

The first stories of the website: The election of one of the components of the band, relation to deep sea, fishes, bubbles, the menu...

More, we sent also a mailing to all the Media, radios, tvs and promos announcing the launching of the LP:

Next step was the promotion photos, so we met the photographer Blanca del Amo and we had this:

We had a good material. From some of the photos the illustrator made the draws, this first one for Santi:

On second place the draws for the singer, Clara:

We had also more draws for the fishes, the background, etc. here´s one:

About the programming: I would say this is a migration web from AS2 to AS3, it is made in Actionscript 3 but still with the forms of AS2. I didn´t have time to use a framework or so. For example I used the classes of GSkinner for Collision Detection, Tweenlite with recursive callings, Liquid Design from NoPonies, Google Analytics for AS3, etc.

Here the first trials, you can check the initial movement clicking. You can check the liquid design changing the browser width and height.

At the end we chose illustrations instead of photos. I have to say here, first time I saw the white background I told the designer:
- Ey! But the sea is blue!
She laughed a lot about this. So I gave up my narromind and realised:
- Oh, it´s good to have a designer surprising me!

So, this is how the website works: There´s a little intro where you choose your character, then you just go swimming, you can go up or down pressing the mouse. Also there´s a wave and the sea background moving, with the fishes which are also the menu onRollOver:

So, this is an example of how to make a banner in Actionscript 3.0 with no timeline animation.

tracker_mc is just a movieclip out of the stage. This way, after five seconds of animation I use this movieclip as a reference just to call again to the function infiniteMovement()
